WHERE ARE THE QUAD CITIES
The Quad Cities are located in East Central Iowa and North West Illinois. The cities are joined by the Mississippi river. This is the only place in the United States where the Mississippi River runs East and West rather than North and South. The four Cities that make up the Quad Cities now are (Davenport, Bettendorf Iowa, Rock Island, and Moline Illinois. Originally East Moline was the fourth city and not Bettendorf. This fourth city replaced the Tri-City area of the big three, but in the 1920's East Moline was added, only to be replaced in the 1970's by the growing Bettendorf. The Quint Cities was tried by a few to keep peace, but the Quad Cities name stuck. Actually there are more than the four cities that connected without true boundaries. Silvis, East Moline and Milan on the Illinois side all connect without interruption with Moline and Rock Island. Within a ten minute drive are Le Claire, Princeton, Eldridge, Park View, Pleasant Valley, Panarama Park, Blue Brass and Buffalo in Iowa and Coal Valley, Hampton, Rapids City, Port Byron, Colona, Carbon Cliff, Geneseo and Andulusia on the Illinois side. A very dense concentration of cities and towns on both sides of the river. The Quad Cities are joined by the river and five bridges and a common interdependent history.
Indian legend says that the Great Spirit decided to make a new river. He traveled out of the North and traveling South, hit an area of unusual beauty and turned his head back to take a longer look. The result is the direction of the river was changed by the turn of his head.
The area includes Scott County and part of Muscatine and Johnson counties in Iowa and Rock Island County as well as parts of Mercer and Bureau Counties in Illinois.
The whole population of the metro is about 380,000 people with 139,225 households. 484,500 people live in the immediate Counties and within the 100 mile shopping radius, there are about 2,568,700 individuals.
The Quad Cities are close to many other major cities. Chicago is 180 miles away and St. Louis is 240 miles. Smaller cities include Cedar Rapids 90 miles, Iowa City 100 miles, Peoria 95 miles, Milwaukee 201 miles, Indianapolis 303 miles. It is easy to take a weekend and avail ourselves of the activities of the larger cities without their problems and expense.
